Reading Bonaventure’s Most Popular Text: The Many Versions of the Triple Way

January 19, 2022  (7 pm PST /10 pm EST)

Dr. Joshua C. Benson, Ph.D.

Today, we tend to consider Bonaventure’s Journey of the Mind into God as his “classic” text—but medieval readers, who regarded him as a spiritual master, preferred his Triple Way. In addition, the text itself was presented differently then: it would be written in shorthand, with mistakes in the Latin, without titles or chapter divisions, and even with different content depending on the version one was reading. Examining the text as a medieval reader might have found it can shed light on Bonaventure’s historical circumstances and how he wrote, as well as the spiritual significance of the text itself.

About Dr. Benson:

Dr. Joshua Benson publishes and teaches the history of medieval theology, with a special focus on Franciscan figures. He received his MA from the Franciscan Institute and his Ph.D. from St. Louis University and where he focused his research on St. Bonaventure. He is currently the associate professor of Historical and Systematic Theology at the Catholic University of America, where he has served since 2008. He was also the chair of the department of Theology and Franciscan Studies at St. Bonaventure University from 2018-2020. He is married and the father of six children.
