Italian Renaissance artist Giovanni Bellini painted ”Saint Francis in the Desert” around 1480 in Venice. The play of light and shadow, the symbolism of plants, animals, and objects all point to this as a Transfiguration of Francis during his mountain retreat on La Verna in the Fall of 1224, which we celebrate on Sept. 17, the Feast of the Stigmata. Join Br. Bill Short, as we learn more about the artist who created this masterpiece now in the Frick Collection on 5th Avenue in New York.
