It has become customary to see both Francis and Clare as Co-Founders of the Franciscan Tradition. But there are many other co-creators who often get forgotten or relegated to a camp of mere “followers:” namely laity. Whether known by name—including figures such as Angela of Foligno and Margaret of Cortona—or known anonymously in the “background” of Franciscan narratives, the laity were important forgers of the tradition known today as “Franciscan.” This lecture opens space for lay people today to find their own place in this spiritual tradition.
