“This is what I want, this is what I seek, this is what I desire with all my heart.”
–St. Francis of Assisi
How to Apply
The easiest way to apply to FST is to complete the online application, uploading the supporting documents as they are ready. Alternatively, you can download the Application for Admission and upload the completed form with your other documents, or submit via mail, email, or fax. If supporting documents arrive before your application, they will be attached to your application when it arrives. Please remember to review all admissions requirements carefully before applying.
Your complete application must include the following:
- $50 Application Fee
- Statement of Purpose
- Official transcripts from all institutions of higher education previously attended
- Letters of Recommendation:
Degree applicants send one ministerial and two academic Letters of Recommendation.
Non-degree applicants submit one Letter of Recommendation, either ministerial or academic.
International students submit additional elements including but not limited to a Financial Declaration Form and TOEFL score. If you are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, please refer to our International Student page for more information.
Students who wish to transfer credit from other institutions please see our Transfer to FST page.
* Deadline to apply for the spring 2020 semester is December 13, 2019
Statement of Purpose
Your Statement of Purpose should do the following:
- Tell your academic and/or ministerial story
- Explain a brief theological perspective you might have (or that you hope to pursue)
- Describe a professional goal you have in mind.
Your Statement should be not less than 500 and no more than 700 words and should be clear, concise, free of errors and well-written. It should provide information about you and demonstrate solid writing ability.
Letters of Recommendation
Letters of Recommendation must use the Letter of Recommendation form. Academic letters of recommendation can be from a present or former supervisor or professor and must be sent to FST by the recommender—not by the applicant. Address letters to Fr. Garrett Galvin, OFM, Executive Vice President. Find complete instructions on the Letter of Recommendation form.
Mail your $50 application fee via check or money order to the Admissions Office made out to the Franciscan School of Theology. You may also pay by phone with a credit or debit card.
Official transcripts must be sent directly to FST from the schools attended. No decision can be made about your admission until FST has received all required official transcripts.
We strongly encourage you to apply for aid before the priority deadlines. The priority deadlines are March 15 for fall semester, and November 1 for spring semester. Financial Aid applications submitted after the deadlines will be considered in the order received and according to academic merit, need, and the availability of funds.
Please visit our financial aid page for further instructions.
We highly recommend a school visit as the best way to learn about FST. You can join us for liturgy, attend a class and meet faculty and students. Schedule a visit easily with our web form or contact our admissions directors. If you live out-of-state, please give our admissions office at least two weeks’ notice to prepare for your visit. Overnight lodging is available and free for prospective students.
What Happens Next
After submitting your application, you will hear from our admissions department confirming that they have received your application. Our Directors of Admission will work closely with you to make sure your application is complete and your questions answered.
Great care is taken to process applications in a timely manner. After an admissions decision is made we will send you a decision letter. If you are admitted, you will also receive a Letter of Intent form. You are required to return this form to confirm whether you will accept, decline, or defer your acceptance. It is important to return this form promptly as your financial aid application will not be considered until the admissions office has received your letter of intent form.
Should you have questions at any time during the application process, whether about degree programs, scholarship opportunities, or life in California or if you would like to schedule a visit, please contact our Admissions officers (contact information below). We are here to guide you through the process of becoming an FST student.
We look forward to receiving your application!
