Today

Once a seminary preparing men for priesthood, FST now prepares lay women and men, religious, and clergy for shared ministry in the Catholic Church and society. As the only Franciscan seminary and theology school of its kind in the United States, FST continues to bring the questions of contemporary culture, society, and Church into dialogue with the ever-ancient, ever-new Word of the Gospel.

2012

Affiliation with USD

Since 2012, FST has been proudly affiliated with the University of San Diego. All FST students remain fully enrolled at FST, earning their degrees from our Franciscan School of Theology while enjoying USDโ€™s classrooms, libraries, and vibrant campus life. The partnership also expanded opportunities for collaboration in theology, peace and justice, nonprofit leadership, and education.

1968

Berkeley, California

The theological studies program moved to Berkeley, California, and became the Franciscan School of Theology, joining the Graduate Theological Union (GTU)โ€”an ecumenical consortium of nine theology schools dedicated to dialogue and shared scholarship.

1854

Mission Santa Barbara

At Mission Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, California, FST was first chartered as an apostolic college, beginning our journey in Franciscan education.

Our Living Tradition

From its earliest days, FST has responded to the changing cultural, social, and religious realities of California and the West. Inspired by the enduring Franciscan tradition, we continue to form leaders who embody faith in actionโ€”serving Godโ€™s people with compassion, wisdom, and joy.
