The Franciscan School of Theology (FST) is excited to announce its new academic partnership with the University of San Diego’s School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) to offer a first-of-its-kind Doctor of Education (EdD) in Catholic Social Thought in Practice.

This innovative doctoral program combines academic excellence with Franciscan spirituality, and is designed for professionals seeking leadership development through the lens of Catholic social teaching. Graduates will be equipped to make a lasting impact in sectors such as Catholic healthcare, education, social services, chaplaincy, mental health ministry, and diocesan leadership.

Why Choose the EdD in Catholic Social Thought?

Inhabiting the intersection of academic rigor and spiritual formation, the EdD in Catholic Social Thought in Practice integrates the rich intellectual and spiritual heritage of the Catholic faith with the practical demands of contemporary professional life. It answers the question, “How can I bring more of my faith into my work?”

By drawing on the teachings of St. Francis of Assisi and the principles of Catholic social thought, the program equips students to navigate complex social and societal challenges while promoting care for all living things. Ideal candidates are current or aspiring leaders committed to advancing social justice, human dignity, and the common good in their professional and personal lives.

The Partnership Between FST and USD’s SOLES

The collaboration between FST and SOLES highlights their shared commitment to forming ethical leaders who integrate faith and practice. FST’s expertise in Catholic theology and social justice, combined with SOLES’ leadership training, provides students with a comprehensive education that connects academic theory to real-world application.

The EdD Curriculum & Structure

Designed for working professionals, this hybrid program is 95% online, which enables students to balance their personal responsibilities with their academic pursuits.

The program consists of 45 units and can be completed in just three years. Students will be part of a cohort-based structure, with a maximum of 18 students per cohort. While there is substantial interaction with instructors and cohort members in a virtual format, there is still an opportunity to engage in meaningful in-person interactions during annual residencies.

The curriculum is structured around the following learning outcomes:

  • Integrating Catholic social thought and spirituality into students’ personal and professional lives
  • Applying Catholic social thought to organizational leadership, including program design, assessment, and management, with a focus on social justice and the common good
  • Generating original interdisciplinary research that advances the Catholic identity and mission of students’ organizations

Annual immersive residencies are held at the San Luis Mission Retreat Center, a peaceful and reflective environment that serves as the perfect backdrop for community building and prayer. Each week-long residency includes seven hours of contact time per day, along with intentional opportunities to deepen spiritual formation and engage in collaborative learning.
