We’re excited to announce two captivating talks as part of our Franciscan Zoom Lecture Series, where we delve into the profound dimensions of Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si’. This series goes beyond the conventional understanding of “catechesis,” extending its embrace to both new and mature believers who are called to embrace a radical vision of integral human development.

October 12, 2023: A Catechesis of Laudato Si’

February 15, 2024: Weaving the Franciscan Threads: Engaging the Imagination, Constructing Laudato Si’ Bridges

Speaker: Michael Perry, OFM, Ph.D.

Laudato Si’ calls us to recognize the interconnectedness of all living things, deepen our knowledge of the common threats the earth and all its inhabitants face, rediscover the spiritual bonds that unite us, and engage our collective energies to address underlying causes in an effective and sustainable manner. The Center for Integral Ecology, A Laudato Si’ Initiative located at Siena College is working with those involved in the physical structures and natural environment at Siena College to promote a culture and ethics of sustainability that might contribute to the healing of the earth. The Center is working to establish effective partnerships with Franciscan universities and studies centers in the U.S. and in other parts of the world towards these same goals. The lecture will discuss ways our center seeks to engage the Franciscan spiritual, moral, and social imagination in a creative and effective manner, identify obstacles, and propose a way forward for transformative collaboration.

April 18, 2024: Laudato Si’ and Energy Transition: Perspectives from Working with Frontline Communities in New Mexico

Speaker: Joan Brown, OSF

The spiritual, moral and practical teachings of Laudato Si’ will be explored through the lens of work with frontline communities and people of faith in New Mexico & El Paso Region. Environmental justice and how Laudato Si’ can offer practical guidance and inspiration for a shift in our worldview and in practical ways as we move more deeply into on-the-ground implications of climate change will be covered. Franciscan-hearted people carry an important responsibility, sharing the genes of joy and community by living out the practical implications of Laudato Si’ in the energy transition sphere. Some tools and resources for the way forward for Franciscan-hearted folk will be offered.
